What does ultrasound or tomography-guided liver biopsy consist of?

It consists of taking a sample of liver tissue to be examined under a microscope. A puncture is made in the liver with a needle that extracts a small piece of liver tissue to look for abnormalities.

Approximate procedure duration

1 hour. Remember to show up 1 hour before the appointment at the service point.

Does it require fasting?

This study requires 6 hours of prior fasting.

General indications for the examination
  • Have coagulation tests (PT, PTT, INR), haemoglobin and platelets less than 30 days old.
  • Do not apply or take any type of anticoagulant at least 24 hours before the procedure.
  • Report to the point of service 1 hour before the appointment.
  • Bring the medical order and authorisation for service in force and addressed to the Hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe.
  • Bring previous studies of the organ to be studied, such as ultrasounds, CT scans and MRI scans; in addition to your medical history.

    Home care:
  • Rest for 24 hours after the test, make sure the puncture site is not reddened, hot or oedematous, or that you do not have abdominal pain.
  • Avoid driving on the day of the procedure.
How can I claim my results?

The results of this examination can be collected 10 to 12 working days after it has been completed, either in person at the Radiology Service (2nd floor, Tower B) or virtually via our online services available on the HPTU Mobile App or via our web portal by clicking here.
