Skin biopsy

What is a skin biopsy?

A superficial skin sample is taken under local anaesthetic using a special instrument called a punch or scalpel, which leaves a round or oval effect that is sutured to avoid the risk of scarring. It is useful for the early diagnosis of inflammatory, premalignant and malignant skin lesions and for defining surgical margins according to the type of tumour or lesion diagnosed in the biopsy.
