Cancerology

Oncology is the branch of medicine specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, utilizing various therapeutic methods such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, among other medications and procedures.

In our Oncology Unit, we have a highly specialized human and technological team to diagnose, treat, and support all patients with a cancer diagnosis and their families throughout their journey.

Our services in Cancerology

The Oncology Unit is composed of a group of medical and paramedical specialists responsible for the treatment and supportive care of patients with cancer or other benign or chronic conditions requiring interaction with the unit's specialties. We offer the following services:

Clinical Specialties

  • Adult Clinical Oncology

We diagnose, treat, and follow up with adult patients diagnosed with cancer.

  • Adult Hematology

We diagnose and manage patients with any benign or malignant blood disorders (lymphomas, leukemias, multiple myeloma, anemias, coagulation disorders, etc.).

We also perform bone marrow transplants for benign or malignant diseases.

  • Oncological Neurology

We manage and follow up on brain tumors and neurological manifestations related to cancer diagnosis.

  • Pain and Palliative Care

We provide comprehensive and supportive care to cancer patients or those with chronic diseases, addressing not only physical symptoms but also psychological, social, and spiritual needs, assisting their families through all stages of the illness, including bereavement.

Surgical Specialties in Oncology

  • Head and Neck Surgery

We manage malignant and benign diseases located in the head and neck.

  • Breast and Soft Tissue Surgery

We manage malignant and benign diseases located in the mammary glands or soft tissues such as skin, muscles, tendons, and subcutaneous tissue (e.g., melanomas and sarcomas).

  • Gynecologic Oncology

We manage malignant diseases located in the female reproductive system such as the cervix, ovaries, endometrium, vulva, and vagina.

  • Oncological Orthopedics

We manage and follow up with patients with benign or malignant tumors in bones and extremities.

  • Oncological Urology

We manage and follow up with patients with cancer in the urinary system for both sexes or the male genital system, such as the prostate, testicle, and penis.

  • Gastrointestinal Oncological Surgery

We manage and follow up on malignant diseases located in the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, esophagus, small intestine, colon, and rectum) and the peritoneum (tissue lining the abdominal organs).

We offer various therapeutic options for cancer treatment such as:

  • Oncological Therapy (Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy, Targeted Therapy, Hormone Therapy)

This involves the application of medications for cancer treatment, which can be administered via different routes. This treatment is prescribed by hemato-oncology specialists and administered by specialized paramedical staff.

We have spaces designed for the well-being of our patients, families, and friends accompanying this process:

  • Independent chemotherapy rooms for adults and children, where medications requiring clinical monitoring and blood transfusions are also administered.
  • A specialized inpatient unit for the management of hemato-oncology patients.
  • A specialized center for the preparation of oncological medications.
  • A case management-based care model, where an oncology nurse accompanies the patient and family throughout the process, addressing clinical and administrative concerns.
  • Psychological and social work support to facilitate treatment adherence.
  • Radiotherapy

This clinical specialty involves the follow-up and treatment using radiation for benign and malignant diseases.

To provide high-quality integral care, we have:

  • Two dual linear accelerators
  • Conformal radiotherapy
  • Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT)
  • A support team including medical physicists, radiotherapy technologists, nursing professionals, and nursing assistants.

  • Bone Marrow Transplant

This treatment is provided for patients with benign or malignant hematological diseases or metabolic diseases in children, involving the administration of healthy stem cells to the patient.

This treatment is provided by hematology for adult patients and by oncology and/or hematology for pediatric patients. Throughout this process, the continuous support of case management nurses is available, ensuring guidance and assistance at every step of the treatment.

We have special isolation rooms to care for patients eligible for bone marrow transplants or requiring induction chemotherapy. These rooms are equipped with:

High-efficiency HEPA filters and positive pressure at the entrance of each room, which reduce the risk of infections.
Spaces for the permanent accompaniment of family members.
Nursing staff specialized in oncology and pediatrics for the care of children.

Additionally, we offer support activities for cancer patients and their families, such as:

When to check Cancerology?

It's essential to consult with an oncologist if you experience concerning symptoms such as changes in moles, unexplained lumps, abnormal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, or inexplicable pain. Additionally, if you have a family history of cancer or have been diagnosed with a condition that may increase the risk of cancer, seeking the opinion of an oncologist for evaluation and appropriate management is crucial.

Always rely on the guidance of a physician to steer your diagnosis.
